Traveling by Car in Italy

The chip driver’s licenses we use in Turkey are sufficient. You will also need a passport and a credit card in your own name when renting a car.

Limit 130 for the Autostrada, 50 for the city. Applications such as radar and EDS are also available in Italy. The speed limit is 20km/h lower in rainy weather.

In the city, pay attention to ZTL (zona traffico limitato) ‘traffic restricted zone’ warnings and parking signs.

Autostrada

Autostrada saves time on your long-distance journey. Signs are standard green like all over the world.

For the Autostrada you need to buy a ticket (bigletto) at the box office where you enter. There is a red button you can press for help if there is a problem with the machine, but it is difficult to find someone who speaks English.

Biletinizi sakın kaybetmeyin ve almadan gitmeyin. Çünkü biz gittik. 🥲

There are places to stop on the Autostrada. Some pockets also have a help button that you can stop and press in case of need.

Exit Autostrada

It is obvious in all of them, but let us say it again; The toll booth with the blue (Carte) sign is credit card, the white one is cash, the yellow one is telepass (our hgs).

You give your entrance ticket, you pay the amount. So what happens if you lose the ticket like us? I’ll tell you about it in the stories;

In cities and tourist destinations, there are zones reserved with lines for parking on the sides of the roads. Mostly paid, sometimes reserved for locals only. Check for signs nearby.

These signs and payment machines are usually in Italian. Have a translation app like Translator Go on your phone.

Keep spare change for payments. Some of them can also be paid by card. Check out apps like EasyPark that make paying and parking easy.

If there is a number in the parking space (it can also be on the sidewalk), you need to enter that number at the checkout.

After payment, place the receipt inside so that it can be read through the windshield of the vehicle. Be prepared for a possible inspection;

There are also private indoor/outdoor parking lots outside the streets. Save the parking lots at your destination in advance.

In general, we can say that driving in Italy is very similar to driving in Turkey, the cities are not as chaotic as Istanbul.
