We continue with Stockholm, one of the most beautiful capitals of the Scandinavian countries, which is often referred to as “Venice of the North”.
Stockholm, It is built on 14 islands and the islands are connected by bridges. in a romantic Swedish city.
The oldest and most historic district is the small island in the center, Gamla Stan. Stockholm is also home to the Nobel Prizes. Gamla Stan, where the Nobel Museum is also located, is the most touristic area of the city with its narrow streets, historical buildings, small squares and royal buildings.
In this guide, besides Gamla Stan, we will visit Östermalm, Norrmalm, Södermalm and islands such as Kungsholmen, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården.
Warning: Stockholm can feel like the most beautiful city in the world, especially on sunny days. Most of the city is covered by parks and forests, which is the most beautiful part. We are embarking on a journey where we will experience both natural and cultural richness and discover good flavor stops.
Even though we arrived in the winter season, the weather was quite mild, we were a bit lucky and we think that the cold of the Nordic countries is a bit exaggerated. Having visited Iceland, Norway, Norway, Sweden and Denmark in different seasons, I can say that there is not much cold to fear.
But of course, good weather is the best time to visit the city, especially in the spring when the trees on the streets are in bloom and throughout the summer Stockholm is very pleasant.
On this trip we rented a house in Södermalm. Compared to European cities, prices are generally a bit higher. One of the biggest prejudices about Sweden is that it is an expensive country. Yes, it is expensive in certain things. But the food and drink places were more satisfying for us than Istanbul in terms of cost / performance balance We will look into this in detail, but as an example, you can have a cocktail for 150kr in a good world-ranked cocktail bar, or a set menu for 500kr in a Michelin-recommended restaurant. It is a route where you can make choices according to your budget.

Historical island: Gamla Stan, Norrmalm, Östermalm, Södermalm, Djurgården and Skeppsholmen are the main attractions. Especially the last two islands have a high concentration of museums. A city of art and design, Stockholm is also home to many impressive museums.
One of the top places to visit in Stockholm is the subway stations, which are shown as the longest art gallery in the world, don’t forget to see the different subway stations designed with artists. Riddarholmen Church, Dramaten, Stadshuset and Stadsbiblioteket are also on your list of places to see.
We didn’t focus much on the museums this time as we had visited them more intensively on our previous visits, but it would be good for first-timers to research them. Vasa Museum, Moderna Museet, Fotografiska, Skansen, ABBA Museum, Nordiska Museet, Nobel Prize Museum, Historiska Museet are the museums we visited on our last and previous trips.
If you want to visit one or two museums, you can choose the ones above according to your interests. Vasa Museum and Fotografiska are not to be missed. Note that Moderna Museet is also free for 2 hours on Friday evenings and online tickets for museums like Fotografiska are usually more advantageous.
Free museums in Stockholm:
– The City Museum
– The National Sports Museum
– Accelerator
– The Living History Forum
– Liljevalchs is free to visit on Mondays.
– Moderna Museet is free on Fridays from 18.00 to 20.00.
For first-timers, it might make sense to get a Stockholm Pass , check the list of included museums and events on their website, if you are interested and can visit at least some of them during your trip. The Stockholm Passdoes not include public transportation. 1 Day Pass 869kr – 3 Day Pass 1419kr and so on.
Here are some of the places you can visit with Stockholm Pass:
* Vasa Museum
* Royal Palace
* The Viking Museum
* SpritMuseum
* Nobel Prize Museum
* Skansen open-air museum
* Nordic Museum
* Storkyrkan Cathedral
* Tekniska, the National Museum of Science and Technology
* Fotografiska
* Artipelag Art Gallery
→ Pom&Flora: We tried the Södermalm and Odengatan branches. They have another branch. We think it’s the ideal place for breakfast in Stockholm. There is something for everyone. Healthy bowls, desserts, egg options. Material quality is top notch.
→ Greasy Spoon: One of our old favorites, they have 2 more branches outside Södermalm. It has more of an ‘American Diner’ breakfast feel but of course the pitch is high quality and authentic. Pancakes, Bacon & Egg Flatbread, Benedicts are on the menu. Birria Cheese Toastie prepared with brisket is very successful.
→ Komet Stockholm: This is a bakery and breakfast place. Their semlas and croissants are already successful. They work 7-17 on weekdays and 8-17 on weekends. They have only one branch: Kungsholmsgatan 10
→ Gast Cafe: This is a cafe located in the very central Rådmansgatan. Apart from bakery products, you can come for classic breakfast items such as avocado toast or pancakes. Open from 7.30-17 on weekdays and 9-17 on weekends. The places you can go for breakfast in Stockholm open quite early, so you can find a place even if you have an early flight.
→ À la Lo: This is a café where all products, from food to drinks, are plant-based. You don’t need to be vegan to come, the bowl and open toasts we tried were delicious. Near Odengatan.
→ Astoria: A former movie theater on the famous shopping street in the Östermalm district. The Swedish 3 Michelin star restaurant has been transformed into a brasserie concept by Frantzén Group. They also have a cool brunch menu where you can go before noon with a reservation. Our least favorite place on the list, but still a good option for a cool and bubbly brunch.
Stockholm and Copenhagen are two of our favorite destinations in Scandinavia, where we love the bakery products.
We visited many bakeries to try “kanelbullar”, one of the most popular products of Swedish cuisine, and more. In Stockholm, as in much of Scandinavia, sustainability in the kitchen is taken very seriously. For this reason, almost all businesses are now striving to produce less waste, to respect their traditions and to produce innovative products.
You can find quality bakery products in many places.
Here are five recommendations from different parts of the city on our trip to Stockholm:
* Stora Bageriet: Quite central, can get crowded. Both smorrebrod and bakery products are delicious. Cardamom bun 👌🏻
* Socker Sucker: More of a patisserie than a bakery. The products are as flawless as if they were hand-drawn. There are both vegan and classic options.
* Lillebrors Bageri: The bakery on the St. Eriksplan side is one of our favorites. Semla, croissants and breads are very delicious.
* Svedjan Bageri: A qualified and popular bakery in the Mariatorget neighborhood. Semla and Mandelbulle 👌🏻👌🏻
* The Krümel Cookies: This is not a bakery , but they have very good cookies. We tried all of their cookies and liked the Crumb Brulee the best. We visited the Södermalm branch.
Especially when we travel to Europe, our favorite restaurants from the Michelin Guide are those rated in the Bib Gourmand category.
Since 1997, restaurants that offer a complete experience at reasonable prices have been rated Bib Gourmand in the guide.
In Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, 6 restaurants have been evaluated as BibGourmand for 2024. Let’s talk about 3 restaurants that we left happy and that caught our attention.
Matbaren
First, Mathias Dahlgren’s restaurant: Located on the ground floor of the Grand Hotel, this stylish bistro-like restaurant offers an A la Carte menu that interacts with different cuisines from around the world. Buns Bonanza menu, Adana kebab with venison was successful.
Mathias Dahlgren is one of Sweden’s most successful chefs. He won the Bocuse d’Or in 1997 and has been named Swedish Chef of the Year four times.
Restaurang Triton
This place feels like home. We can say that it stole our hearts with its warm atmosphere and unpretentious decoration. Only the set menu is served. We had the opportunity to try two different dishes: salad to start, followed by agnolotti and angler fish. Especially their fresh pasta is very successful. To accompany it, they offer natural wines from different regions of Europe.
Bar Agrikultur
This is a mini restaurant & bar in Södermalm. All the dishes on their frequently changing menu are designed for sharing. The place is as tiny as the plates, ideal for a dinner sitting on the high stools in front of the window and watching the passers-by outside.
Although we found the flavors in some dishes too overpowering, overall it was an impressive experience. Chef Joel Åhlin also had a previous restaurant where he received a star.
Coco & Carmen
This was the restaurant we enjoyed the most on our last trip to Stockholm. It is a pleasant choice especially for lunch at quiet hours. The set menu is served but at a very accessible price for the food. It was a very satisfying menu for us, with all the pleasantries at the beginning and the treats at the end. We found the venison and the hot bread served with it very tasty.
Brutalisten
This is one of the most interesting restaurants in the city. The food here is made with only one ingredient. Only water and salt are used. The menu is divided into three: Orthodox Brutalist, Brutalist and Semi Brutalist
How deeply experimental Depending on what you want to eat , the plates vary. Here is the link for those who want to review the menu.
Swedish Meatballs
We tried this popular Swedish delicacy in many restaurants. One of the most frequently recommended places is the historic Pelikan Restaurant. Although we found the Swedish meatballs successful here, we found the other dishes weak, a bit touristy but worth a try. Nytorget6 was a stop where we found both the atmosphere and the food more satisfying. Here we had Swedish meatballs.
Östermalms Saluhall
This is a quality food market. Just like the Mercato culture common in Mediterranean countries, such food market concepts are very common in northern countries. Here you can buy fresh produce and taste food from the kiosks of good restaurants. Our recommendation here is Lisa Elmqvist for seafood.
Bars
Stockholm has many pleasant bars. Schmaltz Bar and TEDDYS, which you can visit throughout the day, made us happy especially with their sandwiches. The gentleman who runs TEDDYS used to have a girlfriend from Kayseri and speaks a little Turkish :). There is also a good wine list here.
Forbeer you can go to our favourite Mikkeller from Denmark or Omnipollos hatt, which serves craft beers. Omnipollos line also has a decent pizza menu. If you like gin, Hernö Gin Bar should definitely be on your list. 50BestBars award-winning Röda Huset and Lucy’s Flower Shop are two impressive bars that are worth booking. Especially at sunset, Röda Huset!
Street Flavors
One of Stockholm’s most famous street food is Brunos korvbar, a kiosk on Östermalm. They make 4 hot dogs or 2 hot dogs. A popular place, ideal for a quick snack. If you like Lebanese cuisine, you can try Falloumi, and if you miss döner and Anatolian flavors, you can try Çok Döner.
Flippin’ Burgers, one of the best burgers in the world, and Deglabbet, a small pizzeria opened by three friends, are other places we liked. 800 Grader Pizza is also a successful pizzeria with several branches. You can buy slices or whole.
Djurgården has been a favorite route for fun gatherings and peaceful nature walks in Stockholm for centuries. In the past, the island used to be King Erik XIV’s private resting and hunting grounds and was opened to the public. Today it is one of the islands with the most museums and attractions in the city. Skansen is a popular destination with a variety of attractions including the Vasa Museum, ABBA Museum and Gröna Lund, so you should definitely make your way to this island on your trip to Stockholm. Rosendals Trädgård is a garden & café in Djurgården, serving organic and biodynamic products. It gets quite crowded especially on sunny days. An impressive buffet is set up in the cafe on the weekend. You pay for what you choose from the buffet at the cash register. There are Swedish classics like smorrebrod, semla buns, classic cakes like kladdkaka and sandwiches. Open every day of the week from 11.00-16.00. The best way to get to the café is to walk across the canal on foot from the Djurgårdsbron bridge. You can also take tram number 7 from the center, again a 15 minute walk.

An award-winning bar & restaurant, Röda Huset (literally: “Red House”) is a red building overlooking Sergels Torg from Malmskillnadsgatan. It is an interesting three-story building that catches your attention among the plazas. The space is full of details that reflect Scandinavia in many ways. Wooden details, soft lighting, candles on every table, cozy seating and an uninterrupted view overlooking an important square in Stockholm.
But of course this is not enough for us to be so affected. Röda Huset is ranked 31st best in the world according to 50BestBars. (according to 50Best.) The drink menu was designed by award-winning bartender Hampus Thunholm to include local flavors from Sweden. The menu, designed by Thunholm, is full of innovative cocktails that highlight local Swedish produce. All the ingredients and drinks they use are made in Sweden.
One of the details we liked was that the menu was in the form of a folded map. On the map of Scandinavian countries, there are cocktail options prepared with local products. Although it changes seasonally, fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots and rhubarb are currently on the menu. We tried: Rhubarb & Yuzu, Rhubarb & Figs and Frozen Herbs. Frozen Herbs is a sorbet prepared with mint, coriander and parsley served with Martini Prosecco. The staff is also very helpful if you have a hard time choosing between cocktails. We went with a reservation at sunset time, you can go sunbathing earlier as the place gets direct sun (which is not easy to find in Sweden).
All cocktails are 180kr which is ~560₺. Their full menu is available on their website. Although it is a luxurious place, it is also nice that there is no gap between it and more casual places. The food menu is not extensive but intriguing, so keep that in mind if you want to try it. #coriandervesaire #coriandervsstockholm #stockholm #visitstockholm #stockholmfood #50bestbarsw
Schmaltz Bar & Delicatessen is a restaurant, bar and deli in the heart of Stockholm. The place has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and we felt exactly like ‘that place in the neighborhood where we live that we would like to visit every day and become regulars’. It was one of the places we visited again and again on our trip to Stockholm.
Schmaltz Bar is located in a building that also housed a Jewish school at the turn of the 20th century. Schmaltz took his inspiration from traditional Jewish delicatessens in New York and managed to create the charm found in aperitivo bars in Italy.
At 11 a.m., the espresso machine starts up with the smell of freshly ground coffee. Throughout the day, aperitifs, cocktails and a selection from a good wine list are served. They have delicious charcuterie, cheeses, homemade pies, sweets, pickles and a legendary Reuben sandwich. Definitely try their sandwiches.
The team behind the place has many successful businesses in Stockholm. Babette, Cafe Nizza etc… #cişnişvesaire #cişnişvsstockholm #stockholmfood #schmaltzbardelicatessen #visitstockholm #sthlm
Is Stockholm really expensive? How much are the travel costs? How much is the food in a good restaurant? The last post of this trip is about expenses. The amounts you pay in restaurants will depend entirely on personal preferences, but you can take these prices as an average.
Let’s take this opportunity to mention a few places mentioned in the reel below:
– Coco & Carmen: Actually, we were planning to talk about this place separately, but maybe we will share it later. It was one of the places we went for lunch and were most impressed. It was a restaurant with fine dine quality service, a fun style and accessible prices. They serve a set menu, the lunch menu is 500kr per person, consisting of 4-5 plates with a few starters, main course and dessert.
– Deglabbet: 3 of our favorite pizzerias in Stockholm. This is one of them. The other two are the 800 Grader and the Omnipollos line.
– Flippin’ Burgers: The brand of Jon Widegren, who tried dozens of burgers during a week-long trip to America in 2011. This burger joint, which he returned to Sweden and opened with the funds of his supporters on the internet, was once considered one of the best in the world. There are those who say that the brand was sold afterwards and that it spoiled it. However, the smash burgers we tried were delicious.
– Brunos Korvbar: This place is now a landmark for Stockholm. Famous for its hot dogs, this ‘food truck’ in Östermalm has been a family business since 1992.
– Cafe Pascal: It may be the only brand that we have tried all its branches. The locals especially love it, it’s not just a cafe, it’s also highly recommended when you ask for a bakery recommendation. There are many nice branches in the city where you can get a good cup of coffee.
– Nytorget 6: We tried two places to eat Swedish meatballs in Södermalm. Here and the Pelican. Both were not bad, but overall Nytorget6 was better.
– Lucy’s Flower Shop: One of Stockholm’s famous bars, not actually a speakeasy, but that’s how it became famous on tiktok. You can make a reservation. The only downside is the atmosphere, which is a bit claustrophobic in the basement of a building. The place holds 25 people, you can wait in line. The cocktails are 170kr, we liked the ones we tried, they have a zero waste and local product policy.
