Galata

Our Galata Guide prepared with the collaboration of Kişniş vesaire x Local Makers is ready! Galata, which has been a center of trade for centuries, is also a rich settlement that hosts the cuisines of different cultures and peoples.

The Galata region, which the Byzantines called Pera, meaning “opposite shore” because it was on the other side of the Golden Horn, has been an important historical site since the 1200s with its tower and walls.

Settled and ruled by Genoese merchants, Galata continued to grow with the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul and became a neighborhood inhabited by Muslims, Greeks and Armenians.

From the 19th century onwards, Galata, where embassies, foreign bankers and banks settled, became a center where non-Muslims and Levantines formed the majority.

Today, the buildings left behind by this history are used as museums, restaurants and cafes. For tourists and Istanbulites alike, this area can be one of the most enjoyable places in the city.

Yeni Lokanta

One of our favorite kitchens in Pera: Yeni Lokanta

Yeni Lokanta, which welcomes you with its simple decoration right at the beginning of Kumbaracı Slope connecting Istiklal Street to Tophane, is one of the important places in Pera. They serve lunch and dinner every day except Sunday.

The cuisine of Civan Er, the creative chef behind Yeni Lokanta, is not limited to Beyoğlu, we are proud that he has brought his interpretation of Turkish flavors to London with Yeni Soho, which he opened in 2019, and we follow his work with pleasure.

There are a few chef restaurants in Pera that impressed us, and Yeni Lokanta is one of our favorites in this sense. We especially like to stop by during the daytime service at a quieter time and have a pleasant lunch with their burnt yogurt dumplings and their cocktail Fuki, which we can never get enough of.

In this kitchen that values seasonality, locality and ingredients, our favorite dishes other than manti are now classic dishes: Green apple salad, “Izmir goat tulum, macahel chestnut honey, chard, Kastamonu pastırma” & “kitel, antep dried eggplant, chestnut mushroom, yogurt”

At Yeni Lokanta, you can experience the tasting menu consisting of 7 or 9 courses. Their current menu is also available on their website. You can also choose from à la carte menus if you wish.

Asmalı Mescit & 9 Recommendations

There are so many places we love in this area behind Istiklal Street from Galatasaray to Şişhane, we wanted to prepare a small list of our 9 favorite places in Asmalı before we complete our guide.

Glouton: One of the new venues of Chef Cem Ekşi, whom we have known for a long time with Mabou, is a place where seafood is high on the menu and which does justice to the motto ‘Parisian Nights, Italian Lifestyle, Levantine Tastes’. The menu was recently revamped.

Bordel: Just on the other corner of Glouton is Cem Ekşi’s other place: A great place to pair hot dogs, falafels, berliners, after-work delicacies and night snacks with aperol beer.

Sofyalı 9: (Kapandı) The restaurant in Asmalı where the lace curtains take us back in time. Our neighborhood favorite for a classic Turkish cuisine, also featured in the Michelin guide.

Aheste: This is a business that has been in Pera for a long time, and it has undergone a change over time. One of the places we have always loved and identified with Pera. It is just around the corner from the iconic Adahan hotel. It was included in the Michelin guide;

Comedus: The venues inside Adahan will have stolen our hearts, so we have 3 different venues on this list. Comedus is a small wine bar in the middle of the street. If wine & cheese is your passion, it is waiting for you on the most beautiful street of Pera.

Beatrice: This is the newest place on the list, the newly renovated restaurant on the rooftop of Adahan. It has become one of our favorite places to stop by for cocktails/snacks with music for sunset and after.

Ozzie’s Kokoreç: (Moved back to Dolapdere.) Another street food we love in Asmalı is the kokoreç here. Ozzie’s, whose story started with a tiny place in Dolapdere, has been in Asmalı for a while. Kokoreç, uykuluk and sausage are very popular.

Asmalı Cavit: An Asmalı classic. We love the tables in the arcade and the cozy atmosphere upstairs. Its appetizers, hot herb and lakerda are as impressive as its atmosphere.

Taproom: One of the newest venues on the list is a craft beer place that opened after many years in the place where Babylon used to be, which was perhaps the most vibrant place in Asmalı.

Simone

When it comes to Galata, you can’t not mention the viewpoints. Pera is one of Istanbul’s most impressive districts, and wandering the narrow streets lined with historic buildings is one of the most beautiful feelings we feel in this city.

At the end of a day spent like a flaneur, there will be plenty of terraces to soak up the sun and relax this week. The first one is @simoneistanbul, located on the rooftop of Ruz Hotel, a 25-room boutique hotel on the rooftop of a building with 120 years of history, this delightful venue welcomes you with a lively bar as soon as you exit the elevator and a panoramic view of Istanbul behind it.

Simone’s menu consists of sharing and main courses. There are salads, hummus, arancini, burrata with truffle, sautéed calamari, etc. We tried arancini and burrata and loved them;

Main courses include rock sea bass, veal cheek, ravioli, ravioli and organic village chicken. They have a small menu but vegan/vegetarian options are also available.

Our favorite of the main courses was the ravioli with fried sage, wild mushrooms & ravioli with butternut squash & Erzincan tulum.

As for cocktails, our favorites are ‘Cabron’ with white tea and peach and ‘Verde’ with green plum & lamb’s ear.
