Porto

Portugal’s city that is as beautiful as Lisbon: Porto!

This city on the banks of the Douro River is famous for its port wine, colorful ceramic buildings, narrow streets and the famous Ribeira district. You can discover one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, Livraria Lello, explore its historic palaces, the works of the famous architect Serralves and taste delicious food.

The best times to visit Porto:

  • Porto’s most popular tourist season is from May to September. During this period it is sunny and warm, but it can be more crowded.
  • April-May and September-October also have a good climate and are less crowded.
  • It is usually enough to stay in Porto for 3-4 days. So you can see the main points of the city, taste the wines and visit the surrounding areas.

Where did we stay in Porto?

Located in the historic Massarelos neighborhood of Porto, @massareloshouse was one of the best stays we experienced in Europe. It was recently restored and started to welcome its guests with 15 apartments. Traditional Porto architecture and details have been preserved.

We stayed in the Bandeira I apartment on the third floor. The names of the rooms come from the 18th-century ceramic factories that make up Porto’s cultural heritage. You can find our host’s detailed Porto recommendations here. Since this is a newly opened business, it is enough to send an e-mail to make a reservation.

The living area is flooded with natural light from large windows that open onto the garden with a small view of the bridge, and features a kitchenette, a double room and a mezzanine that can be configured as two single beds. It’s more like a 50 square meter apartment than a hotel room. Each apartment is designed for a different need.

The most impressive feature of Massarelos House is its charming common areas. Carefully designed by landscape architect Jesús Moraime, the garden offers an oasis of tranquility with shaded terraces, fountains and seating areas. There is a relaxation area that opens onto this garden, and there are balconies and terraces on the mezzanine floors. Breakfast is delivered to your room each day and can be enjoyed in these common areas. The apartments are also pet-friendly.

Accommodation:

  • Hotels, hostels or Airbnb options in the city center can be a good choice. So you can walk around the city on foot.
  • Porto’s Gaia district with its famous wine producers is also a good option.

Transportation:

  • Porto has well-developed metro, bus and tram systems for urban transportation. You can use these means of transportation with a single ticket.
  • It’s also a good option to walk in the city center, as the history and architecture is quite impressive.

We tried many restaurants on our short trip to Porto. There were places that we left satisfied as well as flavors that we could not make sense of. First time travelers to Porto usually prefer the places that Anthony Bourdain once featured on Parts Unknown… but as a local, we found our host’s recommendations more successful 🙂

Let’s talk about the flavor stops we enjoyed on this short trip!

What did we eat in Porto?

– Bakery products, croissants 📍Ogi by Euskalduna
– Breakfast, snack light plates 📍Época
– A good take-away burger shop 📍CURB
– For a sandwich during the day and a good meal in the evening 📍 Reitoria (the focaccia bread here is amazing)
– Michelin recommended chic chef restaurant 📍Oficina
– A shabby taverna in the fishing village of Afurada 📍 Taberna São Pedro
– Traditional Portuguese cuisine in the tourist center 📍Traça
– A food market and bakery in the center of the city 📍Mercado do Bolhão and Confeitaira do Bolhão

“Franceshina” 🥪 The two most popular addresses for this sandwich are Cafe Santiago and Gazela, both of which we tried. Cachorrinho, known as a Porto-style “hot dog”, is also very popular. Unfortunately for us, these products were a disappointment. Unnecessary calories, we think you can pass.

A Fishing Village: Afurada & Taberna São Pedro

In this authentic 28-year-old tavern, we head to the opposite bank of the Douro river for fresh seafood cooked on the grill.

This is Afurada, a fishing village in Vila Nova de Gaia. A place where the tables overflow onto the street in the summer months and the smoke from the grills set up on the street involuntarily makes you feel like you’re in Adana. It is located on a corner just behind the beach.

Since Afurada is a fishing village that has not yet been spoiled by tourism, it is possible to see various seafood grills on the streets.

We recommend you to reserve your table before coming to this tavern where mostly locals come. Even though Afurada is a quiet village, this is a place with many regulars. It’s no wonder it’s so popular, as it offers an unpretentious but delicious experience.

The portions are very filling, but you can choose half portions or skewers in pieces. It would be good to get the advice of employees according to the season. We tried half portion of sardines, half portion of salmon, skewered squid and shrimp. We preferred their salad as an accompaniment.

After the meal, when we saw that all the tables preferred “creme brulee”, we couldn’t resist and ordered one ourselves.

All that we said was too much for two people. We paid 46€ for everything.

We loved it. Definitely see this tavern and the fishing village of Afurada. While you are here, you can visit the “Centro Interpretativo do Património da Afurada”, a small museum reflecting the fishing culture of the village. Beyond the parking lot on the beach is the “Lavadouro Público da Afurada”. This is a historic laundromat that has been used by locals for many years.

Another place in this region that we recorded but didn’t get a chance to try is here: Casa Moreira Afurada

You can drive from Porto in 20 minutes to get to this side. Another option is to take the boats from the “Lordelo do Ouro” pier to Afurada.

Things You Should Know About Porto

In the north of Portugal, the country’s second largest city is full of historical and cultural riches: Porto

🌊Porto is located at the point where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Listed in 1996 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Riberia is the historic center of Porto.

🌁 One of the most iconic structures is the Dom Luis I Bridge. Built in 1886, it connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia.

✍🏻 The bridge was designed by Théophile Seyrig, Gustave Eiffel designed the bridge first but was not allowed to build it. Then, when G. Eiffel became very famous, his student Théophile Seyrig had the chance to build it.

📚 The oldest bookstore in the world may be in Lisbon, but the most beautiful one in the world is in Porto. Livraria Lello, which inspired the Harry Potter series, is one of the most visited places in this city.

🍷 The world-famous Port wines are made from grapes grown in the Douro Valley and mostly stored in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.

🚂 São Bento Train Station, which will greet you when you arrive by train, Opened in the early 20th century, it is known for the more than 20,000 magnificent azulejos that decorate its interior walls.

🥪 Francesinha is a famous sandwich-type dish in Porto, with different types of meat, cheese and a special sauce. In our opinion, it is a completely unnecessary calorie that cannot be exaggerated. Porto’da kendine bu şekilde ün yapmış lezzetler olduğu gibi az bilinen ama kıymetli lezzetler de var. We will come back to this in the coming days…

🇵🇹 Portugal’s name comes from Portucale, a combination of Porto and the neighboring town of Cale.

🔨 São João Festival: Held every year on June 23-24, this festival is one of Porto’s biggest celebrations. People gather in the streets, set off fireworks and traditionally hit each other with plastic hammers.
